Call for environmental groups working on waste issues:
establishing a Pan-European coalition
The environmental organisation 'Waste & Environment', based in the
Netherlands, recently started an inquiry to find out if environmental
organisations from various countries in Europe would be interested to
consider to be part of a new to establish Pan-European coalition to campaign
on waste issues.
Waste problems do not stop at borders. We observe that waste companies from
mainly Western European countries are continuously looking for opportunities
to export waste to countries with low landfill tipping fees, or to countries
which do not have strict environmental regulations. Moreover, due to the
enlargement of the European Union, the incineration industry is increasing
its effort to sell incinerator technology to Central and Eastern European
countries. These practices will put a heavy burdon on public health and the
environment if not stopped.
To stop these practices, and to improve information exchange and giving
active support to environmental organisations throughout Europe, we believe
we need to campaign on a European level as well. For this reason, we are
looking for environmental organisations who also think that campaigning on a
European level is necessary and helpful for their own (local) campaigns. We
are in a very early stage of organising, and hope to get funding from a
large foundation. So, this is just a first outline. But, we would be very
happy to get in contact with environmental organisations in Romania who are
working on waste issues and would like to consider to participate if plans
for establishing a European campaign would prove feasible .
