Dear Alex,
I understand your sadness and yet your need to leave Romania to find a
better life. Too much corruption, cynicism and hypocrisy for daily bread
can choke anyone. Vote with your feet- go live where you want to live, learn
what you wish to know, speak and argue openly to improve life, and love
who you want to love. Every place in the world has good and bad
points...things that appeal and draw us to one place or another.
But if I may, as a person who chose to live in Romania, may I ask you to
still think of Romania and find ways to help it improve. We can hope that
with this election and what seems to be a serious commitment to real laws
with an honest and politically neutral professional Minister of
Justice, that Romania can find its way back to being trusted by its
citizens. This would be wonderful for everyone.
You will always be part of the life you grew up in, small things
will remind you daily as you observe your new life. That will be both a
pleasure and a sweet pain- enjoying the new and missing the old. You are a
risk taker and we wish you well. And while we all wish that Romania for
the last 15 years had been a far better place, we must recognize that
change is inevitable and not necessarily to be feared. Some people need to
travel and see the world and should do so. Romania needs its people to
see other ways of life and make comparisons.
For all the faults of the politicians in the USA today, it is still a
place where new people come everyday with their new ideas and viewpoints and
as a result, make the USA better. Who has the most patents in the world?
The USA - because of all the wonderful people who ask their questions and
try new ways. The USA cannot be some stagnant back tidal pool. It is a
vibrant place where people challenge it daily; they lobby and protest and
petition for change. And it will change again and again. This I look
forward to.
I felt a similar vibrancy here in Romania these past few months -
students and friends wanted and pushed for a change and it happened and I
certainly hope it will continue. And I also hope more people from other
countries will choose to live here and try to make it a better place.
Romania should welcome them. We learn more from those who do not think exactly
like us. Familiar and comforting things are also very important; the key is to
find the right balance in life for ourselves and for our countries.
And some day you might even come back to Romania to keep it moving
forward. But whether you do or not, your actions elsewhere will be felt in
the world. Do your best, the world and Romania will be the better for it.
cu respect,
Beth
