Proposal for M.Sc. Thesis:
ANALYSIS OF LAND-COVER CHANGES
IN ARGES COUNTY, ROMANIA
A junior research group on Postsocialist Land Reforms and Land Use of the
Humboldt University Berlin is seeking a Master student to conduct an analysis
of remote sensing data for Arges county in Southern Romania. The student is
supposed to start in June 2005.
Overall objective: The group has the objective to examine the effects of
land reforms on changes in land tenure and land use in postsocialist societies,
as a basis for the design of policy and programs for sustainable land use. The
student will contribute to these overall objectives by generating a
comprehensive and up-to-date land-cover data set.
Responsibilities: The researcher is expected to work in close
collaboration with the research project. The research tasks include the
preparation of the time series of remote imagery for interpretation and
analysis. As remote sensing data we will use medium-resolution images (mainly
Landsat). The derivation of land-cover maps can be done using either visual
on-screen interpretation or image classification, depending on the previous
experience of the candidate. The research is expected to result in land-cover
maps that provide quantitative estimates of changes in land-cover over time for
the research area.
The research includes extended field work in Romania for ground
truthing and accuracy assessment.
What we expect: - Bachelor degree in geography or related discipline;
- Access to a computer for the candidate;
- Advanced experience with remote sensing and geographic information system
techniques;
- Working level of English in speaking; writing skills are an additional asset
(the working language in the group is English)
- Willingness to travel and conduct field work in remote areas of rural Romania;
- Reliability, openness, and humor.
