Ambassador Aurel-Dragos Munteanu Dead at 63

Washington, D.C. – H.E. Aurel-Dragos Munteanu, former ambassador of Romania to the United States, former Permanent Representative of Romania to the United Nations, Executive Vice President and co-Founder of the Institute on Religion and Public Policy, and a founding member of the Romanian-American Chamber of Commerce, passed away on May 30, after a two-year battle with cancer. Ambassador Munteanu was 63 years old.

After years of opposition to the Communist regime in Romania, Ambassador Munteanu was central in its downfall. He held several posts in the transitional government, ultimately becoming Romania’s post-revolution Permanent Representative to the United Nations, and President of the United Nations Security Council in August 1990, as Iraq invaded Kuwait. Ambassador Munteanu was responsible for drafting and negotiating the resolution that, for only the second time in UN history, authorized the use of force against a member state and was intimately involved in the negations that created the coalition which opposed the invasion.

Ambassador Munteanu then became ambassador of Romania to the United States, where, among numerous other things, he secured Most Favored Nation trading status for Romania.

Ambassador Munteanu had a long and distinguished career in multilateral political and economic negotiations, settling in the United States after his tenure as ambassador to Washington.

The ambassador was author of several books and contributions to academic magazines, and spoke numerous languages. His breadth of knowledge on a wide variety of topics was truly impressive.

In 1990, he helped encourage the formation of the Romanian-American Chamber of Commerce with which he was always closely associated.

"Aurel-Dragos Munteanu was more than just a friend and colleague to us; he was our mentor. And for me, he will always be "fratele meu" [my brother]. His wisdom, insight, courage, and kindness live on in the hearts of the countless people whose lives are better because Aurel was among us. Our deepest sympathies extend to his family," stated Mark Meyer, Chairman of the RACC.
