TOUGH QUESTIONS AHEAD FOR 
ROMANIAN AND BULGARIAN COMMISSION NOMINEES
26 October 2006 - The European Commission candidates 
nominated by Romania and Bulgaria face a rigorous parliamentary inquiry, it was 
revealed today. 

Socialist Group vice-presidents Hannes Swoboda and Jan 
Marinus Wiersma voiced concern about the Romanian nominee in particular but said 
both candidates would be expected to answer searching questions in a detailed 
inquiry procedure. 

Romania's nominee is senator Varujan Vosganian and Bulgaria 
is expected to confirm later today that its nominee will be EU affairs minister 
Meglena Kuneva. 

In a joint statement, the MEPs said: "We will be very fair 
but very tough. 

"The Bulgarian candidate is well known for her European 
attitudes and political involvement whereas the Romanian is unknown. What is 
known is that he has been very much on the right-wing of politics and on the 
payroll of big economic tycoons. 

"As far as the Romanian candidate is concerned, it is clear 
that we will have to explore his European profile but also his acceptance of 
European standards and European values." 

The Euro MPs said the two nominees, if accepted, would push 
the political balance of the European Commission to the right. They added: "We 
shall be demanding from the Commission President, Jose Manuel Barroso, that he 
keeps Commission policy in the centre of the political spectrum."
