Friends of the Earth Europe and CEE Bankwatch Network are seeking a 
Project Assistant for EU Funds (Intern)

Expected start date: 1st October 2007
Duration: 6 months
Location: Brussels

Friends of the Earth Europe and CEE Bankwatch Network are looking for an 
intern to assist our campaigns for a more sustainable and transparent 
use of the Structural and Cohesion Funds and for a reform of the 
European Investment Bank, with the focus on the new member states of 
Central and Eastern Europe.

Friends of the Earth Europe campaigns for sustainable and just societies 
and for the protection of the environment. It unites more than 30 
national organisations with thousands of local groups and it is part of 
the world's largest grassroots environmental network, Friends of the 
Earth International.

CEE Bankwatch Network is an international NGO with member organisations 
currently from 11 countries across the central and eastern European 
region. The aim of the network is to monitor the investments supported 
by the international financial institutions as well as by the European 
Union funds, and to propose constructive alternatives to their policies 
and projects in the region.

Job tasks

The Project Assistant will assist the campaign coordinators for EU funds 
and EIB with the following tasks:

* coordinating a working group of member organisations dealing with EU 
funds in eight new EU member states of Central and Eastern Europe
* administrative and reporting tasks
* creating a new edition of a map of controversial infrastructure 
projects in the new member states
* preparing campaign materials and statements by collecting and 
analysing information and conducting research on the funding impacts in 
the energy, transport and/or waste management sectors and on the 
implications for climate change
* advocacy activities and meetings with the EU institutions
* organising a seminar on EU funds in Brussels in Spring 2008
* updating website and basic design work

 
Requirements

Essential

* Previous NGO or volunteer experience
* Excellent written communication and fluency in English
* Knowledge of one or more languages of Central and Eastern Europe
* Excellent research, analytical and organisational skills
* Good knowledge of at least two of the following issues: climate 
change; transport; energy; waste management; nature protection laws; 
environmental impact assessments; EU funding structures; EIB
* General knowledge of politics in Central and Eastern Europe and of EU 
institutions
* Commitment to the values and missions of FoEE and Bankwatch
* Ability to grasp quickly complex policy issues
* High levels of motivation, good team player, creativity, flexibility, 
sense of humour

Desireable

* Knowledge of website editing and graphic design software

 
The intern will be based in the FoEE office in Brussels - a highly 
motivating working environment in an international NGO. We will pay a 
monthly contribution to living costs.
