The centre's expert staff (10 psychologists, psycho-pedagogues and recovery pedagogues, along with three volunteers) will provide social services free of charge aimed at teaching the families of autistic children how to help their offspring acquire independent life skills, as well as individual and group psycho-social counselling and training for children's families to build support networks. The centre is set up as part of a EUR 72,251 Phare project, to which the General Council of the Bucharest Municipality contributed EUR 36,000. 'Autists live in a world of their own, an inner world. In the eyes of an autistic child you find love, trust, will and courage. My team and I want to help them find here those feelings thereby they can integrate into our world,' Vergilia Florea, the project manager, said. According to the centre's expert staff, the worldwide incidence of autism is of one autistic child to every 166 healthy children. In Romania, there are 50,000 autistic children, according to official data, and 200,000 according to NGO statistics. by <mailto:[email protected]> Nine o'Clock (C) 2000-2007 Nine o'Clock
