*The Merry Cemetery of Sapanta* is a unique graveyard featuring humorous
epitaphs on painted crosses. It is also a human treasure—a testament to the
tradition, creativity and spirit of the Romanian people and to human nature
in general.

The recently published book with the same title (Purple Martin Press) is the
collaborative result of translator Adrian G. Sahlean (renowned for his
translations of Romanian national poet Mihai Eminescu) and NY based
photographer Peter Kayafas.

While the fine epitaph translations by Adrian G. Sahlean provide the English
speaking audience with a clear insight into what is so remarkable and unique
about the Sapanta people's memorialization of their deceased, Peter
Kayafas's photographs straightforwardly portray the colorful carved crosses
in all their resplendent dignity.

We can all learn from the great humility and humor of the crosses and words
of the Merry Cemetery of Sapanta.

You are invited to meet translator Adrian G Sahlean for a live presentation
about this unique place, its creator, Stan Ion Patras, and the community
that inspired him, and the historical context for the birth and evolution of
the Cemetery. You will have a chance to hear live song ballads that showcase
this unexpected crossbreed of humor and sadness underlying the Maramures
spirit, and watch a short original film about *The Merry Cemetery of
Sapanta. *Mr. Sahlean will offer insights into the difficulties of rendering
transcultural meaning.

A limited number of books from this exclusive edition will be available for
purchase and book-signing. Part of the proceeds will be used to fund Global
Arts projects such as these.

ADRIAN GEORGE SAHLEAN lives in Needham, Massachusetts where he is the
co-founder and President of Global Arts Inc., a non-profit organization
actively promoting Romanian literature, music and art in the United States.
He holds advanced degrees in both philology and psychoanalysis, and has
authored several volumes of poetry translations into English as well as
essays on literary translation. His meter-and-rhyme renditions of 19th c.
Romanian "national" poet Mihai Eminescu—the UNESCO Poet-Of-The-Year in
2000—brought him international recognition and were awarded the Eminescu
Gold Medal (2000) and the LiterArt XXI Grand Prize of the International
Association of Romanian Writers and Artists (2002). His translations of
Eminescu's poetry have been adapted for readings and musical performances
including a recording of Prince Radu von Hohenzollern-Veringen reading Mr.
Sahlean's translation of *Luceafarul* *(The Legend of the Evening Star) *with
an orchestral setting of George Enescu's *Poema Romana* (Romanian Cultural
Foundation, 2002), and an off-Broadway theatrical and choreographic
production of it (Acorn Theatre, 2005) repeated in 2008 (Marjorie Dean
Little Theatre.) In 2006, a bilingual edition of Mr. Sahlean's translations
was published ("Eminescu—Eternal Longing, Impossible Love") accompanied by
an audio disc of the volume, narrated by noted actor Jeremy Geidt (American
Repertory Theatre – Cambridge, MA) with music illustration by concert
pianist Horia Mihail.

Mr. Sahlean is currently finishing a doctoral thesis on psychoanalytic
interpretations of the Romanian national ballad *Mioritza.* He is a member
of the Romanian Writer's Union, the Society of Modern Psychoanalysts, the
Romanian Union of Physician Writers and Journalists, and the US Pro Tennis
Association.
