Regarding the hash functions ... I don't care which preferences implementation ends up getting used, as long as it is 100% Bug Free. :) Mine took all of 20 minutes to write, so I don't care if it gets thrown away. Bonus points if you can come up with a preferences implementation that imposes no upper limit on the size of the key or value fields.
