Well there you are -- most of us are using our Linux boxes for other purposes. For example, I use mine to develop music software. And of course I also use it for email, web site management, word processing and a variety of other things. I don't have space for another machine, and although I have a laptop, it's not really fast enough to be my main machine for either development or audio. Since I make very little use of the audio side of things anyway, I don't have too much of a problem here: I usually just run jackd as a non-root user (or not at all) and live with it. But it would be nice to be able to get reasonable audio performance when I want it, without having to compromise my system by running GUI applications as root. I could, and perhaps should, try patching capabilities into the kernel, but for a SuSE system like mine that's unlikely to be anything like as simple as it is for you with PlanetCCRMA, and I pity anyone who perceives it as the first requirement to make proper use of this software on their new Linux installation. What would you think if you got your boxed Cubase home and found that the installation instructions demanded a whole weekend of work? (Of course, installing Rosegarden itself isn't a simple boxed-product deal either yet. But the point is that it probably could be, whereas it's unlikely we could ever have any influence over the installed kernel. Distros like PlanetCCRMA are one answer, but it's hardly inspiring to be told that the easiest way to get this Linux software running on your Linux system is to trash your Linux system entirely and replace it with a different one. That sort of advice is all too common already.)
