For some reason this email just came back to my mind, after I'd failed to 
reply to it at the time.

That behaviour might do for you in this instance, but it's not actually right.  
What RG should do is remember both the program control and the specific 
ports, and apply them one after the other so that the ports override the 
program defaults where appropriate.

I've just done a quick test and it did appear to work correctly for me.  I 
guess you've got more serious problems with synths to worry about at the 
moment, but I'd be interested in the results if you want to double-check 
this.
