I don't recall the previous discussion in dssi-devel. Although DSSI specifies a way for the host to query programs from the plugin, it doesn't specify any way for the host to query other sets of data like pitch labels. I can't think of a particularly good way of doing that: configure keys and values are not supposed to be interpreted by the host, except for a small set of predefined keys, and the configure return value is not supposed to be interpreted by the host even for the predefined keys. It might be reasonable-ish to have a convention for a configure key that the host or UI can use to tell the plugin to load a particular pitch map in a known format, but even that is a stretch. VST 2.0 does define such a thing, I think -- effGetMidiKeyName. Never used it myself, but I assume that's what it does. Hm.
