I've just installed dssi.h and everything built fine (with your fixes).

Yup :-(.

I haven't added anything in the SConstruct file for installation, so that's to 
be expected.

Strange, it should cache the results. Do you have a .sconf_temp directory ? 
The Qt/KDE tests are cached elsewhere, in kde.cache.py.
