That, and your CPU performance sucks too. It really surprises me that a .4 GHz 
difference would translate into a 4x speed difference on non-graphic 
routines.

I just have '-g'. I'll try adding '-O0' to see if that makes a difference (I 
don't remember what's the default -O value).
