Pretty much any current AMD or Intel is 64-bit capable these days, isn't it? > > > My bleeding edge pioneering days are long behind me > > > mon ami, long behind me. > > > > Same here, dude. Same here. > > Getting old sure is boring. Looks like the same thing's happening to me now. I've finally ordered some upgrades for my desktop machine (which dates from the end of 2002) that will convert it from a proper dual-processor Athlon to the cheapest dual-core AMD64. Thus marking the end of the only machine I've ever had that was actually at the top of the range of (sensible) PC hardware when I built it. The main reason I'm upgrading it is not that it's too slow, but that it overheats too readily and I've never managed to cool it satisfactorily. I'm getting sick of listening to the overheating warning alarm. I'm hoping the newer and more mainstream chip might be easier to deal with. I can't really afford to be spending the extra on a dual-core or whatever, but I really didn't like the idea of upgrading to something that might not be any faster. I'm hoping to leave the memory and stuff unchanged if I can. (Did you know AMD have just switched from a 939-pin CPU socket to a 940-pin one? WTF is that all about? You have 939 pins already, and still find you've forgotten that one vital pin? And guess what, they've only been using the 939-pin one for a couple of years -- it replaced their even more antique socket that had, er, 940 pins. Do I wish I understood this sort of thing, or would I prefer not to?) Chris Using Tomcat but need to do more? Need to support web services, security?
