I can confirm the problem is related to Qt (and Qt tools) versions:
I was using Qt 4.5.3 and I just installed Qt 4.6.3
$ lupdate -version
lupdate version 4.6.3
(From where is lupdate 3.3.8b coming from? I always get lupdate having the
same version as Qt itself has.)
And now I get
$ make ts
(...)
Updating 'data/locale/rosegarden.ts'...
Found 4163 source text(s) (0 new and 4163 already existing)
Updating 'data/locale/ca.ts'...
Found 4163 source text(s) (0 new and 4163 already existing)
(...)
$ grep '<source>' data/locale/rosegarden.ts | wc -l
4166
So I now get a result consequent with Michael's one but I have no more
translation in the MIDI manager dialog :(
