Ted, and all:

I tried out Ubuntu-Studio 12.04, which has the low-latency kernel, and
learned more about the problem.

1. It takes significantly more tries to get it to fail (Rosegarden
crash) than on the generic Ubuntu kernel.
2. It still misses notes (sometimes in the melody - not just the chords
track), and leaves notes sounding.
3. If I turn off the MIDI-thru routing in Rosegarden, and route the MIDI
signals using JACK, it misses a lot less notes, and I never have a
problem with notes left sounding.
4. I can reproduce the problem using the Emu10k1 synthesizer, but it
takes a lot of tries.
5. Using the Emu10k1 synthesizer, it seldom misses notes.
6. A different sequence editor, musE, does not experience a similar
problem. It works with either Qsynth or the Emu10k1. It never misses a
note. It generates the proper sound for the two recorded instruments,
but you have to keep setting it up to do so (it forgets between
recordings).

Anyway, I hope this additional information proves useful.
