Hi Ted, et. al. JACK MIDI is essential for "talking" to wide range of software synthesisers, e.g. the Bristol package (http://bristol.sourceforge.net/). There are work arounds to its absence, such as a2jmidid (https://github.com/linuxaudio/a2jmidid/), but those are a pain to use and are very sensitive to the startup order of various applications.
