Thanks.  This is super-helpful and I managed to reproduce the problem.  I'm moving this discussion to feature request 298 as that appears to be the change that introduced this.

https://sourceforge.net/p/rosegarden/feature-requests/298/

I responded in the feature request, but also re-posting my comments to the user mailing list as maybe it could be interesting to have other thoughts here.

After reading and testing a bit more, I see how this feature could be useful but I think it should be slightly modified from the current implementation in the following ways.

- The yellow 'lane' should only show if the modifier key (e.g. ALT) is pressed (i.e. unless users really wants this mode do not show it, as it can clutter a bit the visualisation)

- Behaviour of CTRL modifier (clone / copy note) should not be disrupted, would it be possible to have ALT + CTRL to have a constrained clone?

- The constraint should strictly only happen if the modifier (ALT) is pressed and in that case it should be enforced wither horizontally or vertically based on the initial movement. This should be really tested extensively because it depends on many factors including: zoom levels (both horizontal and vertical), number of selected notes, type of mouse and mouse settings (speed etc.), user's mouse 'motor skills' (also depending on the type of hardware: mouse, trackpad, ball, etc.)

- Possibility to have two different modifiers for pitch and time constraint, for example ALT for blocking time (probably the most useful as pitch also already has the indication on the piano roll?) and SHIFT for blocking pitch (with the caveat that SHITF is also used to override the grid in draw mode)

- Consider to have this set as a switch directly in the matrix editor and not as a general preference as it may be quite context-dependent based on the type of editing / composing being carried out in a certain moment (there's plenty of space

My two cents

Lorenzo
