This question is not easy to answer. The original OSM Data is formatted XML that is bloated. Also, it contains a lot of data thats pretty irrelevant to routing. Let me give you some numbers. http://routingdemo.geofabrik.de is running an extract of Western Europe. The XML formatted .OSM file is about 19.5 GB, the extracted road network has 1.1GB and the preprocessed data uses about 750MB on disk (2.5GB RAM).
