Hi all spooners,

I have had a go at installing RISC OS 4.02 on M$ Windows XP and,
after 3 attempts have failed. :-(

Like Tim Powys-Lybbe I get two HostFS icons on the iconbar if I
click on the compiler icon within the RPCEmu folder, but get just
one icon if I click on a 'short cut' that appears on the menu above
the M$ Windows Start icon (bottom left of screen). There are other
differences.

Anyhow, following ROLs instructions in vfree402 I get stuck at
instruction 3. I have never been able to create a 'directory' in
RISC OS to put the old boot in so as to make way for the proper
RISC OS boot 'directory' in hd4.hdf .

The installation of RPCEmu Spoon goes fine and I readily agreed
with the empty licence agreement. :-) I like that one.
Then I followed ROL's instructions in vfree402. A bit that puzzles
me is that it says to copy the complete contents of rpcemu07w.zip
to the RPCemu folder. Now most of the components of rpcemu07w are
there already from the spoon edition which didn't surprise me,
but rpcemu07w included hd4.hdf , hd5.hdf and src, not present in
spoon. So from rpcemu07w I only copied hd4.hdf and hd5.hdf . I
assumed src consisted of source files?

At instruction 3 I got the RISC OS desktop with banner for RISC OS
4, but couldn't get any further as the keyboard didn't seem to work
and eventually the mouse pointer froze.

I will check the keyboard and keyboard settings as Peter Howkins
suggests when my wife isn't watching (it's her computer and she is
paranoid about me upsetting her machine).

Which bits of rpcemu07w, e.g., cmos/ram, rpc.cfg should I use in
RPCEmu rather than the those of RPCEmu Spoon? And what about
hd4.hdf? Why is there no hd4.hdf in Spoon?

Spoon has files hostfs, ffa and hostfsfiler, ffa in poduleroms,
but I can't see the equivalent of these anywhere in rpcemu07w
or hdboot.

Should I only use the ROM image in vfree402 and ignore the rest
and ignore hdboot.zip from the rpcemu07w website
(www.b-em.bbc-micro.com etc)?

Mystified,
Dave Lane
