I've further investigated this, file permissions and users seems to not be
the problem, I can write to the directory ok with RPCEmu, but messenger pro
(the very same copy that works in VRPC (RISC OS 6.10and previous selects)
and on a RiscPC (currentlyrO6.10) shared via the same filesystem) throws a
wobbly and completely stiffs RISC OS (4.02) requiring closing down the
rpcemu window and restarting.

The message showing in the terminal window is:

MIPS: 74.891693 (AVG: 66.765968) 1
HostFS could not create directory
'/media/.newsbase/!MailBox/!NewsDir/RemoteNB/Overviews/0': No such file or
directory
HostFS could not create file
'/media/.newsbase/!MailBox/!NewsDir/RemoteNB/Overviews/0': No such file or
directory 2
MIPS: 92.403366 (AVG: 67.752022) 1

I can manually create the directory 0 at that location without error.

/media/.newsbase is a samba/cifs share which works under VRPC.

I was thinking along the lines of lack of escaping the !s or a long file
path, or a directory name of just "0" but I can create them ok in a new
directory in a filer window.

I'm going back to VRPC for now whilst I have some hair left!
