The way I see it, those double underscore macros are really intended for rpm's 
own use and to allow overriding rpm behavior without having to recompile, 
rather than convenience for spec. 

I'll certainly listen to opposing arguments, but the recent trend has been to 
eliminate these things rather than add more. The reason is that we've seen too 
many of these things become liabilities one way or the other, such as 
presenting questions and decisions to us that have nothing to do with rpm. And 
as long as rpm itself doesn't need sed -i for anything, it's not our business 
to know about sed -i portability or lack of thereof.
