To be clear: GLES was worse in the past. The Kodi UI was rendering at around 20 fps, which is just short of most video content that is 24 fps, so normal playback was not possible. It would stutter. On current kernel and Mesa GLES renders the Kodi UI at a full 60 fps. Playback of different media has been at full frame rate with or without HDR media and all various kinds of video codecs with and without VAAPI assistance. Play a few 60fps HDR videos on YouTube for something pretty for your eyes. :)
