I believe we are finally getting somewhere
By doing capabilities() in R I get:
jpeg png tcltk X11 aqua
http/ftp sockets libxml
TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE FALSE TRUE TRUE TRUE
fifo cledit iconv NLS profmem cairo
TRUE TRUE TRUE TRUE FALSE FALSE
proving that my copy of R doesn't use cairo
Now to find a copy that does use cairo
