--disable-mmap should work, or rather should happen automatically
if the os does not support mmap (linux 2.4 does support mmap
though). The same is true for madvis and posix_fadvise ...

the *advise family of functions has seen some dramatic improvements
in the 2.6 kernel series ... so there is bound to be limited
functionality in 2.4 ...

I have not 2.4 around anymore, but if you do and want to produce
some patches to help rrdtool work better on 2.4 this would be cool.

maybe bernhard has some thoughts on this too.
