It is possible to open rrdtool in pipe mode and enter the data every 5 seconds. However, it may be that the file is in use when you do so, making it impossible to run the graph scripts. Just try it, it could also lock the file for write access only so that other processes can still read from the database. See the rrdtool manual page, section "remote control".
