Sure this is a problem.  I asume you have proper settings, especially max.
If so, I don't see why spikes should occur in the first place.

Dump the database with rrdtool dump.
Then restore again with rrdtool restore, and a flag: -r

Try to setup a history mechanism.  For instance: keep the values for
each update in a file per day.  Keep a few of these files.  Also keep
a copy of your database file each time.  When a spike occurs, save the
history files.

This should make it possible to debug the problem.
