Thanks! That was a nice shove. It took me a lot of trial and error, and some 
googling, but I figured it out. 

I have one more question. I get an output that looks like this

0x0
0.495240

From what I read, the 0x0 represents the image that would have been created. Is 
there any way to get rrdtool to simply not try to create the graph? I can grep  
out the string, but that doesn't seem as clean.

for that there is the PRINT function in rrdtool graph, instead of the GPRINT. 
PRINT prints it to the stdout.
