Fixed it, I was missing the lambda:
it "should raise exception if response does not match expected" do
lambda{ @connection.remote_command('server', 'root', [{:command =>
'ls /', :expects => /blah/}]) }.
should raise_error(Ssh::CommandError, 'command did not return
expected result')
end
