I think that is normal during some phases of rsync's execution; at those
times there is a companion process that is supposed to be doing the work.

I would appreciate it if you could compile from source yourself and
see if that makes a difference. I would very much like to know if there's
a binary compatability problem when running that solaris 2.5.1 binary
(which I supplied) on solaris 8. So far you've had luck with the rsync
2.4.5 that was compiled on solaris 8 by Andrew Tridgell but not his 2.4.6.
If 2.4.6 does work for you if you compile it yourself, that will provide
evidence for a binary compatability problem. If compiling 2.4.6 doesn't
work for you, also compile 2.4.5 the same way and if that works we'll have
evidence that there was something changed between those two versions.
