I tried without the second ":".

And here it what comes up on my machine:

Connection refused
rsync: connection unexpectedly closed (0 bytes read so far)
rsync error: error in rsync protocol data stream (code 12) at io.c(165)

What is this ?

Do I have to have the daemon running on the backup machine ?

We *CANNOT* help you without seeing the actual command line you're using to
try to run rsync with.
