I use rsync-2.3.1 on BSDI 4.1. It works very fine for me.

I've never met such a error. But TIOCGETD seems to be an old
ioctl. Did you build your kernel without COMPAT_TTYIOCTL?

What is your login class? If you are a default normal user, your
datasize is limited to 16Mbytes on your login. A default normal
user can use up to 64Mbytes by changing your process
limit. Please see the limit(1) man page. If you need more
memory, please consider to change your login class, or change
datasize-max/-cur entry of default class in /etc/login.conf.
