Paulo (and Mr. Lang tambien),

You might be interested to know that the Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5.9 release will be shipping with rsyslog v5.8.12 as an optional package. Red Hat is going for a dual-component approach in 5.9, making it possible for people who are happy with with rsyslog-3 to stay with it (rpm name rsyslog) and those who want the newer version to take advantage of it (as rsyslog5 rpm). [http://red.ht/VkQrGS]

Somewhere between rsyslog version 3 and 5.8, rsyslog started doing its own caching of dns lookups, so that would resolve your problem Paulo.

My *last* intention is to take away potential support business from Adiscon (please buy support from them if you want to use the latest and greatest features of rsyslog!), and perhaps you already know this Paulo, but one option you have is to disable reverse-dns altogether -- settling for only ipaddrs in your log files. In short, this could be done by adding -x to /etc/sysconfig/rsyslog (but depending on your config there could be more to it). If you'd like any assistance from us at Red Hat side, please open a support case in the Red Hat customer portal and ask for me -- I keep tabs on all the rsyslog cases.

Cheers!
