... in the past, we had very bad experience with similar setups. Usually,
the users stumbled into the branch that was not for their version. But
maybe a proper robots.txt can help here (in regard to search engines).

Maybe the outcome of the doc work which now seems to start is that we can
work quite differently. E.g if we generate the doc, we may be able to
generate man files or info docs. But as I said... lots of options here.

I agree, thought, that the current state is not very well. At least I have
begun to describe what the minium version is for a config statement. That's
actually all we need, because we usually don't break things (remove
statements).

the only sane way I've seen to do this is to have a pulldown at the top of the page to switch from version to version. As far as the search engines go, you can let them see all the different versions, or show them a page that combines all the different versions info.
