ok, that works, as you've suggested.  at the cost of going through the
motions of queue/dequeue on a separate queue, i get less brutal
manageability of the logfile.  low duty cycle of pstats should cause
minimal load issues, i would expect.

i can live with this. thanks!

of course, would be nice if pstats direct-to-file reacted appropriately to
the HUP, but nbd... :-)
