That's already possible today. I thought I already posted how to do
this, but apparently I didn't

I'm concerned shipping such a patch downstream and deviating from upstream.

good question, the two approaches I see are either one file with multiple stanzas, all but one commented out (and comments explaining the different variations) or <configname>.sample.<option> if you can have files in that directory that are not used.
