One category of things is just the latest version of everything as it's
released (and/or the nightly versions). This is not expected to be in the
official Debian repo (although I could see each release going into Sid as a
possibility)
Fwiw, I've published newer versions of rsyslog via
backports.debian.org in the past and I plan to do so in the futuren.
The current version there is 8.16.0 (currently stuck in the NEW queue
[1]), it should reach the backports archive soonish.
That's the main reason why we are very hesitant to create our own
Debian packages: Michael keeps up pretty closely and he of course does
much better packages than we with out limited know-how in this regard
could do.
Michael, would it make sense to push your configs into the rsyslog-pkg-debian
repo so that people who are doing their own builds for things (including testing
and libfastjson) are using something as close to a drop-in replacement for the
distro packages as possible?
I recently did a bunch of cleanup on the rsyslog-pkg-ubuntu stuff, and was
thinking that I should do the same to the rsyslog-pkg-debian stuff as I expect
that they are very similar.

Newer versions are more problematic, due to their dependency on libfastjson.
Is this just being uncomfortable with the creation of the libfastjson fork? or
are there other issues?

@Michael: does that mean it would be a good idea to begin creating
packages ourselfs?. Don't misunderstand me: I am far from being eager
to do so, but if we are otherwise stuck with 8.16 and json-c, it would
be reasonable to do so IMHO. If we could avoid it, that would be much
better, though.
