The West, meanwhile, is Dysfunction Junction. A constant, six-way squabble for supremacy. The kind of household where you walk in and at any given moment everyone is pulling hair, gouging eyes and stomping on feet. It's the looney side of the family everyone gossips about at the big get-togethers. Novelist John Irving creates more stable family units than this bunch. There is, from year to year, no rhyme, no reason and no pecking order in the SEC West. Here in the 10th year of divisional play, only Alabama has won more than two West titles (four, plus a fifth it had to give back for committing NCAA hanky panky). Four of the six schools have won the thing, and all six have at least had a share of last place at least once. The preseason media predictions haven't tabbed the correct winner since 1996 (though they still have a chance this year) and haven't nailed the correct last-place finisher since '94. It's a crapshoot again in 2001, where three teams are still clawing at each other trying to win the right to be squashed by the Gators or Volunteers in the SEC Championship game. (And the last-place team is wrong again. The preseason pick was Mississippi, but second-place choice Mississippi State has locked it up instead.)
