Two players who played a major role in the Alabama baseball team's success in 2003 had
their names called on the first day of the Major League Baseball Amateur Draft.

Outfielder Beau Hearod, who led the conference in home runs (20) and runs batted in
(81) was drafted by the Houston Astros in the 10th round. For Hearod, it was the
perfect fit because Houston is near his hometown of Jennings, La.

"I'm pretty excited," Hearod said. "I've always been an Astros fan growing up. They're
close to my hometown, and I have family in Houston."

Hearod has completed his eligibility for the Tide, so he will attempt to sign a
contract and start playing as soon as possible. Shortstop Adam Pavkovich was drafted
in the 11th round by the Anaheim Angels but is debating on returning for his senior
season.

"Honestly I was hoping I'd go earlier," Pavkovich said. "I had other teams calling
earlier. The Blue Jays called in the sixth round and the Yankees called in the eighth
and offered dollar amounts, and I counter-offered, but they didn't pick me. The Angels
got me, but now it's going to be a tough decision to stay or go."

Pavkovich said that the average 11th round draft pick gets a signing bonus of
$60-$70,000 but that the figure that will likely earn his signature on a contract will
be around $140,000-$150,000.

"That's what I told them; they said 'Ok, we'll see what we can do,'" Pavkovich said.

Pavkovich would be the team's leading returning hitter should he return for his senior
season.

Other notable draftees with Alabama ties include football signee Cliff Davis (sixth
round-Houston), and former Alabama players Peter Stonard (fourth round-San Diego) and
Billy Hogan (fifth round-San Diego).

No other current Alabama players or signees were drafted on the first day of the
draft. Other draft-eligible players include pitcher Brian Reed and outfielder Travis
Garner. The draft will conclude today.
