Because most folks find it offensive to have the state tell them what religious principles to adhere to, even if they themselves adhere to them. I sorta like the idea that my government isn't supposed to endorse one religion over another. If the government did, it would be no better than those middle eastern counrties that force their people to adhere to whatever religion the government declares the right one...
