Atlanta claims slice of . . . Alabama
Border county joins metro area's stats

CHAMBERS COUNTY, Ala. -- Does it get any bigger than this?

According to the federal government, the new super-duper greater Atlanta metropolitan
area now has snaked into Alabama. It includes 33 counties with 4.8 million people.
That's a population larger than that of 29 states.

Greater metro Atlanta covers more than 10,000 square miles and abuts the Macon,
Columbus and Athens metro areas. It's only one county from the greater Chattanooga and
Greenville, S.C., areas and two counties from Birmingham.

That's just okey-dokey with Atlanta, but imagine the reaction in little LaFayette,
Ala., when the residents of the Chambers County seat woke up a couple of months ago
and learned they were a micropolitan area associated with another state! Those feds
have such a great sense of humor.

"I don't want nothing to do with that hellhole, Atlanta," said LaFayette's Bill Head,
who runs a fireworks store in town. "We ain't done nobody wrong. There's nothing there
but corruption, traffic and sin."
