The Sooners will come with the No. 1 mystique, and a roster full of talent, especially defensive talent. But they will not be a mystery. In fact, Alabama’s players probably feel like they know Oklahoma almost as well as they know themselves, since they have spent approximately 365 days thinking about last year’s meeting with OU.
The Tide players remember the trip to Norman, the 20-point halftime deficit, and their second-half rally to take the lead and stun the home crowd. They remember Oklahoma answering back, with Renaldo Works sparking an 80-yard touchdown drive. And they remember, vividly, the sick feeling as the football popped out of Tyler Watts’ hand with 24 seconds to play, denying the Tide a chance to possibly tie or win the game as Eric Bassey recovered the fumble and raced for a touchdown.
“We have unfinished business," Tide quarterback Brodie Croyle said on Sunday.
“It really hurt," junior defensive tackle Ahmad Childress said. “That was the most frustrating game of the whole year. We had them in the palm of our hand, and then, it was like a snap of the fingers and they were gone.
“We should have stopped them on that last drive. This year, the defense needs to dominate all day so we won’t be in that predicament again."
