USU player serves jail time

By Randy Stebbins
Utah State University football player Antonio Pennyman was released from the Cache
County Jail on Thursday after serving three days for assault and interfering with a
legal arrest.

Pennyman had been sentenced to 180 days in jail on each charge. However, 177 of the
days were suspended, and he was allowed to serve the two three-day sentences
concurrently. He will spend the remainder of the sentences on probation.

USU police arrested the 19-year-old sophomore wide receiver after he assaulted a
female student on Jan. 21, according to reports. He posted a $1,000 bond and was
released before eventually pleading guilty to reduced charges. He was sentenced on
Aug. 2.

USU police said Pennyman choked the woman during an argument in his dormitory room.
She did not need medical treatment for her injuries.

According to an arrest report, USU police interviewed Pennyman shortly after the
incident and when they told him he would be arrested, he attempted to leave the
interview room, resulting in the interference charge.

USU athletic department spokesman Mike Strauss said Thursday that head Aggie football
coach Mick Dennehy "dealt" with Pennyman after the January incident. Strauss said
Pennyman is on probation with the team, but declined to reveal specifics.

Pennyman was originally charged with assault on a peace officer, assault on the woman
and theft, but the charges were amended by the Cache County Attorney's Office.

Pennyman caught 10 passes for 88 yards last year. He also returned seven punts for 85
yards and rushed once for seven yards.
