Adam,
I apologize for my sarcasm. That was meant to be a joke,
but I understand if you found it inopportune. I am really
sorry.
Anyway, I think that you are right when you say that
preconceived notions (sometimes) lead to non-creative solutions.
But remember, insisting in using well known "solutions" that
create more problems than solve the existing ones is also a bad
idea. People in RT Systems -- not necessarily Linux or any other
specific OS -- know that "complicated", and therefore long
(in time), handlers end up clogging other tasks of your system.
Specially when the system has various handlers and each programmer
thinks that his/her handler is not "TOO COMPLICATED" and he/she
decides that his/her handler can handle a "few floating point
calculations".
This may not be your case (a large scale system), but a
good design philosophy is one that attacks this problem at its
roots -- from the beginning. Not when the system has already
grown too large and the interrelation between tasks/handlers
escapes the trivial understanding.
