If you really need X I recommend an older window manager like twm or what I use, an old version of fvwm (old slackware version with the nice motif look to the windows). If you just need to show some graphics, then SVGALIB is the way to go. If you ever used the old msdos libraries from GENUS (gxGraphics) you might want to take a look at Greg Haerr's Microwindows.
