If you want to do realtime communication over ethernet you should have a
look at David Schleef's RTnet:

  ftp://ftp.lineoisg.com/pub/rtnet/

If you don't need realtime transfer of your data over the net you should
be happy with the normal Linux network drivers and a user space program
which communicates with your realtime task.
