While MATLAB is a very nice environment to try out
new things, at $2900 to $30000+ per seat license
its a bit expensive for many of us. If you really
want to work with a MATLAB type of setup, try

SCILAB at http://www-rocq.inria.fr/scilab/

Many MATLAB scripts will work unmodified
on SCILAB and best of all its FREE, OPEN SOURCE
software. Creating a module for SCILAB to read
from an RTLinux fifo shouldn't take you more
than an hour. Just take a look at the SCILAB
demos on reading/writing directly from/to /dev/audio.
