What's wrong with using two networked machines for the development
system; either

        * Workstation with standard Linux.

        * Target system with RTLinux/RTAI/...

or

        * Workstation and test system with RTLinux/RTAI/...
          May run on read-only ext2fs + RAM disk.

        * File server with NFS or other fully Unix compliant
          network FS. (SMB is not suitable, as it lacks some
          metadata that some tools want.)

so you don't have to store source files on the test/target system? If
you're on a slow network, two extra 100 Mbit NICs with a crossover cable
should do the trick. (Right, I really should separate the SDL based GUI
of my visualization app from the "engine", so I don't have to pump full
screens of graphics over our 10 Mbit network! ;-)

Of course, there is no substitute for back-ups! Even a RAID array can be
fried by a power surge - or get stolen, vandalised or burn in a fire...
