rtl_printf in RTL2.1 (available at ftp://fsmlabs.com/pub/rtlinux/v2),
and the upcoming RTL2.2 (to be released today or early tomorrow) by default
writes to the system log, so you don't have to be at the console anymore.
You can use dmesg and/or tail /var/log/messages (depending on how you configured
syslogd) to view rtl_printf output.
